Indian dairy production plays a crucial role in strengthening the economy and creating employment opportunities, especially in rural areas. India is the world's largest milk producer. In the past year, Milk production in India reached 239.3 million tonnes, with Uttar Pradesh being the top milk-producing state, accounting for 38.79 million tonnes of production and a 16.21 per cent share of the total.

 

History of Milk in India

Between 1950 and 1960, the country experienced a milk shortage. Although indian had the largest cattle population, the milk production was still below 21 million tonnes. Then, the government launched the National Dairy Development Board in 1965, which led the White Revolution across the country to create the Anand Pattern cooperatives at the national level.

In 1946, the Amul milk-producing company was established, a direct result of the White Revolution. 

After that, to celebrate the achievement, November 26 is celebrated as National Milk Day to honour the birth of Dr. Verghese Kurien, the first chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).

The Present status of milk Production is the result of a revolution that has made the country the leading milk-producing nation in the world, with a production growth rate higher than that of other countries.
